When connecting your speaker to your PC or TV with cable. Have you ever wonder can this speaker connect to my device? Which speaker can connect to my TV and which one can use for my PC? There are variety type of connector on different type of speakers. Let’s see what are the differences!

3.5mm AUX
3.5mm AUX is one of the most popular and common audio connections. It is commonly used to audio equipment to PC and laptops however some of latest smartphones and TVs may not have this port anymore. It consists of tip, sleeve and pole. The pole divided into L and R channel. Some cable with 4 poles can support mic input as well.
Pros:
– Compact and lightweight
– Low cost
– Easy to setup
– Commonly used
– Compatible with RCA via AUX-RCA cable.
Cons:
– Metal part can worn out easily
– Audible click and pops when connect/disconnect
– No locking mechanism.
RCA Input
RCA separate L and R channel into 2 connectors. It is commonly found on Bookshelf speakers and some older generation TVs and DVD players. Some latest TV still keep these ports as Audio output.
Pros:
– Color coded, Easy to plug in
– Dedicated port for each channel, easy to identify problem
– Compatible with AUX via AUX to RCA cable
Cons:
– Often produce buzz when connecting active equipment
– Bulky connectorsÂ
– lack of locking mechanism
Optical Audio
Optical input is a form of digital input that uses light to transmit signal. Similar to fiber optic internet cable, optical audio cable uses fiber optic as its core. These connectors are very common in modern TVs.
Pros:
– Fast transmission rate
– Digital audio
– No buzz noise
– Support Dolby Surround
Cons:
– Expensive Cable
– Limited distance due to data loss risk overt certain length
– Fragile cable need more care.

USB Audio
USB are essential ports in all PC nowadays. Many speakers already started to have built in soundcard to stream audio using USB port. However, not all device with USB port support USB audio. USB audio are compatible mainly on PC and Game console.
Pros:
– Support all in one functions
– High quality sound
– No interference
– can charge while using portable speaker with battery.
Cons:
– Not all device with USB port can support USB Audio
– Some speaker with Xmos need to install driver
HDMI
HDMI is the short form of High Definition Multimedia Interface. Commonly found on TVs, Sound bar and Computers. Some HDMI Port supports ARC/eARC Audio Return Channel which allow multiple devices to connect to a TV.
Pros:
– Carry both Video and Audio signals
– Reduce wire amount in setup
– Stable signal transmission
– Capable of HD signals
Cons:
– Expensive Cable
– Sometimes authentication delay
